WHO declares Ebola outbreak in DR Congo a global health emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo's eastern Ituri province a public health emergency of international concern. The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain for which no vaccines or treatments currently exist, has already resulted in approximately 246 suspected cases and 80 confirmed deaths. The virus has reportedly crossed the border into neighboring Uganda, where a 59-year-old man recently died from the disease.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned of 'significant uncertainties' regarding the true geographic spread of the virus due to high population mobility in the affected mining regions. The declaration aims to mobilize international resources and coordinate a regional response to contain the spread. Health officials are urging bordering countries to enhance surveillance while advising against closing international borders, emphasizing that rapid isolation and rigorous infection prevention remain the most effective tools for containment.
